Adopting a Lower Fat Diet
Most of us are looking for easy ways to lose weight. While getting rid of the fat on our bodies may not be as easy as we'd like, it is fairly simple to remove some of the excess fat from our diet. Here are some quick tips to help improve your diet, and maybe even lose some extra pounds while your're at it.
Skip the soda
There may be nothing better on a hot day then a cold and sweet drink, but soda, or pop, is a poor choice for a thirst quencher. Regular soda has far too many calories, and the excess sugar, or high-fructose corn syrup, will go straight to fat.
And diet pop isn't much better. While it may not have the excess sugar and calories, the artificial, or chemical, sweeteners will continue to affect your taste receptors, making you prefer sweet, junk-like, foods. In addition, a diet soda will make you feel full, affecting your appetite, and making you less interested in ingesting healthier food and drink.
Most soda also contains caffeine, a stimulant that can affect sleeping patterns, and has been identified as a factor in stunting the growth of children.
Juice it Up
Water is always the best choice of thirst quencher, but the right juice can be a healthful alternative. Select 100% juice, with no sugar added. Juice with pulp is also a great choice, as it adds fiber to your diet, a key component in a weight-loss focused diet.
Tips when Making Sandwiches
Sandwiches can be a great way to get your lunch meal in quickly. They're also an easy thing to toss in when you're brown-bagging it to avoid the office cafeteria. Here's a few tips to keep the fat out of your sandwich.
Avoid the cheese.
Eliminating the cheese from your sandwich can be a quick and easy way to lower the fat. Another alternative is to select finely sliced or grated low fat cheese. You'll get less fat, but still have the cheese taste.
No more mayo.
Many people don't realize that mayo is faily high in fat. If you can't eliminate this completely, consider reducing the amount you use significantly, as well as choosing a no-fat variety. You might be surprised how little difference in taste there is.
Whole grains ONLY.
The only way to go is whole grain breads. White bread is so refined, the body turns it to sugar almost immediately. 100% whole grain breads can help to stabilize blood sugar, and help you avoid that mid afternoon crash.
Skip the potato chips.
Instead of potato chips, choose a piece of fruit, or some vegetables like carrots or celery sticks. Chips are far to high in salt and fat, and have no healthy benefits at all.
Select lean meats.
With the focus on low and no fat products, it is easy to find low fat cuts of meat that are perfect for sandwiches. Ham, salami, turkey, chicken, almost every type of lunchmeat is available in low fat cuts. My current favorite is a thinly-slice honey ham. Tastes delightful, and four slices on a sandwich is on a couple grams of fat.
More Fat Tips
While it is important to get enough calcium, especially if you are trying to lose weight, make sure you make good dairy choices, skim milk (or nonfat milk) is an excellent choice, as is low or no fat cheese and yogurt.
Skip the fried food. Learn how to cook your meals without using fat or frying.
If you slowly make some of these changes to your diet, you'll be surprised the impact they have on your health, as well as your waistline.
